“Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?”
“Connected” is a series of 31 images that portray the intertwined nature of life and the universe. Gravity is an invisible glue that binds all the objects in the space-time continuum that we inhabit. If we could see this invisible glue, it might look like this. Yet, there are many forces that create bonds between us. In the world of networking websites, 6 degrees of separation is no longer a hypothetical principle. The man next to you on the subway is not a complete stranger. Every vertex in a network of bubbles is connected to all the others. The path is sometimes very obvious, but often it is not. In any case, the connection is there.
Molecules, cells, organisms, populations, galaxies, even you are connected to life in this way.
Born in 1975, Klaus Enrique Gerdes grew up in Mexico City. He studied genetics at the University of Nottingham, England, and received an MBA from Columbia Business School in the City of New York. Most of his professional career was spent as a freelance IT consultant before Gerdes turned to photography, which he studied at Parsons and the School of Visual Arts. Gerdes began to receive worldwide attention in 2007 when his portrait of “Mother & Daughter” was short listed for the Photographic Portrait Prize at London’s National Portrait Gallery. Gerdes currently lives in New York City.
